GLOBALG.A.P.
PRODUCE SAFETY ASSURANCE STANDARD

The new Produce Safety Assurance standard v5 is based on the GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard and consists of only the food safety elements of the IFA standard.
The GLOBALG.A.P. Produce Safety Assurance standard covers the certification of food safety elements throughout a product’s entire agricultural production process, from before the plant is in the ground (origin and propagation material control points) to the packaging.

The Produce Safety Assurance standard offers several benefits:

  • It offers an entry point to good agricultural practices (G.A.P.)
  • It reduces food safety risks.
  • It increases integrity by defining and enforcing a common level of auditor competence.

Those producers whose customers focus on food safety or producers who want to start out with a base level certification covering food safety only.

The Produce Safety Assurance standard is an accredited standard, while localg.a.p. is not. The Produce Safety Assurance standard must be inspected/audited by an approved certification body. localg.a.p., on the other hand, is a capacity-building tool where assessments may be conducted via second or third parties. Producers who participate in the localg.a.p. program may work towards certification under the Produce Safety Assurance or Integrated Farm Assurance standards.

Those CBs who are finally approved for Integrated Farm Assurance, sub-scope Fruit and Vegetables. The auditor and inspector requirements are the same as in the general regulations part III of the Integrated Farm Assurance standard.

Interested CBs must send a signed letter of intent, in which they state that they want to apply for the Produce Safety Assurance standard, to GLOBALG.A.P. They shall also send a confirmation letter from their accreditation body that they have already applied for PSA accreditation. The CB must pay €500 scope extension fee, but no evaluation fee.
