Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) was established in 2011 and is co-convened by the UN Environment Programme and the International Rice Research Institute. Their intention is to promote sustainability and research efficiency in the global rice trade sector. SRP pursues market transformation and public policy initiatives to drive change towards more sustainable standards, which will improve the lives of rice producers and minimize the environmental impact of rice production.
Starting in 2020, GLOBALG.A.P. will manage the SRP verification process and allow SRP verified farms to be registered in the GLOBALG.A.P. database. They will join the more than 200,000 producers with GLOBALG.A.P. certification. The database is an interface used by many global retailers to track the food safety and sustainability status of the primary producers they source from. These verified rice farms will automatically receive a number based on the GS1 system and will hereby be uniquely identified in synch with the numbering system used in the entire upstream food supply chain.
GLOBALG.A.P. has been supporting SRP to build a viable auditing and assurance program, contributing more than 12 years of experience from the GLOBALG.A.P. integrity program.
Through this collaboration, rice farmers will have access to GLOBALG.A.P.’s large network of over 160 independent certification bodies, as well as to new upcoming second party verification bodies allowing for a cost-efficient way of auditing for farmers around the world.
