GGN label

The GGN label – the consumer face of selected GLOBALG.A.P. solutions – is a brand owned and managed by FoodPLUS GmbH.

The GGN label is a consumer label that stands for certified, responsible farming and transparency. Found in stores on both packed and loose fruit and vegetables, farmed seafood, flowers, and plants, the label offers shoppers a quick, consistent way to recognize products that align with their values on the topics of animal welfare and social and environmental responsibility.

Accompanying the logo on product packaging is a unique 13-digit identification number that can be entered into the GGN label portal to trace the origins of the product. All products with the GGN label come from farms with production processes that are independently audited and certified to the strict criteria of GLOBALG.A.P. standards or benchmarked equivalents. Learn more about the portal here.

On 30 June 2022, the independent Dutch educational sustainability foundation Milieu Centraal awarded the GGN label its highest accolades. The foundation deemed the GGN label to be the “top quality label” for the seafood sector out of their recent study on consumer food labels. This was assessed on the basis of environmental sustainability, animal welfare, social responsibility, control, and transparency.

For the first time, China joined the initiative, with Sam’s Club debuting Member’s Mark Atlantic Salmon Fillet products with the white and blue GGN label. Produced on Norwegian fish farms certified to IFA, the salmon is traceable from the packed product to the fish itself, all the way back to the egg.

The GGN label for aquaculture saw widespread growth in 2022. There was an increase of labeled aquaculture products found at Sam’s Club and Walmart stores, as well as across Lidl, Lidl US, Lidl UK and Lidl France stores. The label was also increasingly seen on Deutsche See products.

The label was also used at the first time at ALDI Belgium, Migros Switzerland, Lidl in the UK and Ireland, and at Albert in the Czech Republic. The label was also launched on a new species, Abalone products from South Africa.

The GGN label for fruit and vegetables expanded in 2022 with its official launch in Thailand, where it was seen in 7/11 and Lotus shops. The label was also used on an increased assortment of products at Continente stores in Portugal, where the yellow logo was seen on oranges and carrots for the first time, along with grapes. In April, the GGN Label Team presented the GGN label at Fruit Logistica in Berlin.

In 2022, Spanish retailer EROSKI – which has offered aquaculture products labeled with the GGN label since 2018 – adopted the label for fruit and vegetable products, making it the first retailer to adopt the label for both aquaculture and fruit and vegetable products. Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa, Health and Sustainability Director at EROSKI, commented on the decision to adopt the GGN label in the fruit and vegetables category, saying “at EROSKI, we work to permanently improve the environmental and social sustainability standards of all the processes of the value chain, from the origin of production to store operations.”
