GGN label

The consumer face of GLOBALG.A.P. certification

The GGN label is a consumer label that stands for certified, responsible farming and transparency. Found in stores on both packed and loose fruit and vegetables, farmed seafood, flowers, and plants, the label offers shoppers a quick, consistent way to recognize products that align with their values on the topics of animal welfare and social and environmental responsibility.

Accompanying the logo on product packaging is a unique 13-digit identification number that can be entered into the GGN label portal to trace the origins of the product. All products with the GGN label come from farms with production processes that are independently audited and certified to the strict criteria of GLOBALG.A.P. standards or benchmarked equivalents.

GGN label activities in 2021

In April 2021 the new logo design was revealed during a live launch event. The new yellow label replaces the earlier, sector-specific logos which were used for different scopes and has been expanded to the fruit and vegetables sector for the first time.

The new label can now be found on floriculture, aquaculture, and fruit and vegetable products around the world.

In 2020, HelloFresh Nordics launched the GGN label on their Atlantic salmon portions. Following its successful implementation and positive customer feedback, the Berlin-based meal kit company was among the first to adopt the new yellow GGN label in 2021.
“The GGN logo has allowed us to improve transparency on product origins for our customers, whilst also providing assurances of responsible farming throughout the entire value chain,” says Amy Bredehoft, Senior International Procurement Manager at HelloFresh. “We look forward to expanding its implementation across our aquaculture portfolio in the near future.”

Lidl stores in Germany were among the first to start offering floriculture products labeled with the new yellow logo. These hyacinth bulbs, grown by the Dutch company Handelskwekerij Roma, were on sale in stores in Cologne in December 2021. In the words of the growers:
We’re happy to be part of the GGN label initiative because it helps make the work we put into responsible floriculture practices visible to those who eventually buy our products. Normally those retail customers would not know where their plant has come from, since they never meet us, but now they can connect to the GGN label platform and find out who we are.”

In the third quarter of 2021, Sonae MC became the first retailer to launch the GGN label in the fruit and vegetable category – congratulations! The first product was Vale da Rosa grapes, which were distributed to 40 Continente stores across Portugal.
“It is a great source of pride in all the hard work our producers have done to get us to this point where we can display the GGN label on our products in-store. It has been a long and exciting journey for all of us, with the label representing an important element of our farm-to-fork strategy and our ongoing commitment to transparency and responsible sourcing practices,” says Ondina Afonso, Chair of Continente Producers’ Club at SONAE MC.
