The Year in Review

2021 in numbers

Highlights

New GGN label design and first adopter

The new logo for the consumer-facing GGN label was launched in April 2021 during a live-streamed event. The yellow logo for certified, responsible farming is now a familiar mark on aquaculture, floriculture, and fruit and vegetable products and can be found in stores across 40 countries. Sonae MC, a leading retailer in Portugal, was the first to launch the new label on fruit and vegetable products in September 2021.
We are pleased to promote the hard work of farmers who produce safe and responsibly farmed products by making them visible on store shelves and connecting consumers to farmers via our GGN label portal!

“TOP 100 Innovator” award winner

In February 2021, GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH was recognized with the prestigious TOP 100 Innovator Award for outstanding innovation.
Awarded for “successful innovations in processes and organization” in size category B (51–200 employees), the prize honored FoodPLUS GmbH for the GLOBALG.A.P. Remote procedure, the virtual World Consultation Tour, Audit Online Hub (AOH), our harvest training videos for volunteers, and the GGN label.
Upon receiving the award, which has been presented to Germany’s most innovative small and mid-sized enterprises since 1993, Managing Director Kristian Moeller celebrated that “GLOBALG.A.P. not only rose to the challenges of 2021, but has gone above and beyond to ensure that the quality and integrity of our solutions remain at the forefront of the industry.”

GLOBALG.A.P. Advisory Board elections

On 17 June, the poll closed for seven seats on the GLOBALG.A.P. Advisory Board. The new members – including first-time and reelected members – officially joined the board at the first meeting in November. A further two members were appointed to the board by the shareholders based on their expertise.

Board approval of Integrated Farm Assurance version 6 and GLOBALG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice version 2

In October 2021, the GLOBALG.A.P. Advisory Board approved the interim final draft of the sixth version of Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) for the aquaculture scope and for the product categories fruit and vegetables, flowers and ornamentals, and hops in the plants scope, as well as the interim final draft of the second version of GLOBALG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP). This approval marks a huge milestone for the flagship farm assurance product, an updated version of which has been in the making since 2019. The final IFA v6 and GRASP v2 documents were published in October 2022.

Remote auditing innovation continues

Developed as a response to pandemic restrictions, the GLOBALG.A.P. Remote procedure allows auditors to inspect farms virtually and issue emergency recertification based on a digital audit. In 2021, the procedure entered its second year and was part of the portfolio of innovations for which GLOBALG.A.P. received a TOP 100 Innovator award. As of 31 December 2021, 2,874 certificates have been issued based on remote audits, demonstrating how innovations such as this can contribute to the GLOBALG.A.P. mission of safe, socially and environmentally responsible farming practices worldwide.

Events

With the rise and fall of COVID-19 cases in 2021, restrictions were (re)imposed around the world on an erratic basis, making event planning unpredictable. Nevertheless, GLOBALG.A.P. enjoyed a strong presence at the mix of virtual and in-person events it hosted and attended.

A snapshot of our 2021 events:

The GLOBALG.A.P. Floriculture Future Forum | 28 January 2021 | online

For the first time, GLOBALG.A.P. hosted a virtual event for the floriculture sector. The real-time event featured a news update from GLOBALG.A.P. Following the news update and guest contributions, GLOBALG.A.P. experts hosted breakout sessions on key industry topics, including the GGN label, the revised IFA v6 for flowers and ornamentals, and the new Impact-Driven Approach to Sustainability (IDA) add-on (for flowers and ornamentals). More than 100 stakeholders from all over the world, including Kenya, Colombia, and the Netherlands joined the virtual event.

“All you need to know about…” webinar series | January–May 2021 | online

Beginning in mid-2020, the virtual World Consultation Tour covered 120 virtual meetings with stakeholders from across 20 time zones. The 695 participants offered input and feedback which helped form version 6 of the IFA standard, and version 2 of the GRASP add-on. Over 4300 comments on the standard documents were received from crucial stakeholders in the sectors of plants and aquaculture.

Anuga trade fair 2021 | 9–13 October 2021 | Cologne, Germany
The first in-person trade fair event to take place since the outbreak of the pandemic was on “home turf” for the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat. Coexhibiting with the Federal Association of German Food Traders (Bundesverband des Deutschen Lebensmittelhandels e.V., BVDL), the GLOBALG.A.P. team members enjoyed connecting with network contacts both new and old. It was also the first event at which we presented the new GGN label logo in person – to an enthusiastic response.
