GLOBALG.A.P. – HIGHLIGHTS 2020

World Consultation Tour

In 2019 it was announced that GLOBALG.A.P.’s flagship standard –  Integrated Farm Assurance – would undergo a huge revision process in 2020. The World Consultation Tour was an instrumental part of collecting feedback on the new draft documents for IFA version 6
Made up of 120 virtual round table meetings, the World Consultation Tour welcomed a total of 695 participants and resulted in 2572 comments submitted on the draft documents . Thanks to the events’ online accessibility, GLOBALG.A.P. was able to consult with more stakeholders than ever before! The revision process for version 6 continues into 2021, with the final version to be published in 2022.

Impact-Driven Approach to Sustainability Enters Floriculture Market

Floriculture growers are under increasing pressure to improve their farm sustainability and evidence this by registering their environmental metrics. In response to market demand, GLOBALG.A.P. introduced a new add-on/module in October 2020 which supports producers with this. The Impact-Driven Approach to Sustainability (IDA) is a system to help flower and ornamentals farms to collect, process, and store their environmental sustainability data. Growers who opt into the IDA receive personalized trend graphs and progress reports which give insight into how they compare with similar, anonymous producers in terms of input consumption and performance. This information can help to increase awareness and improve environmental performance on farm level over time. Reporting on IDA statistics will begin in 2021.

Innovative Pandemic Responses

The coronavirus pandemic saw travel restrictions imposed on much of the world in 2020. This caused two very acute problems for producers: one, auditors were unable to travel for onsite audits, and two, in western Europe there was a shortage of farm workers to help with harvesting seasonal fruits and vegetables. GLOBALG.A.P. came up with two unique solutions to help avoid disruption to critical supply chains:
  1. The implementation of a GLOBALG.A.P. Remote Procedure allowed remote inspections, audits or assessments for initial certification, re-certification, certificate scope extension, or transfer. In 2020, over 3,500 producers achieved certification through the GLOBALG.A.P. Remote Procedure!
  2. GLOBALG.A.P. produced a series of harvest videos to support the call for local citizens to help out with the harvest. People with no prior farm experience were able to learn how to harvest asparagus, strawberries, and rhubarb before even entering the fields. The videos are available on YouTube in four languages and have been viewed a total of 26,608 times.

The app was discontinued in 2022.

TR4 Add-on Gains Ground in Latin America

2020 saw a huge jump in the number of producers implementing the TR4 Biosecurity add-on for bananas. In 2019, just 37 producers had a certificate/assessment for the add-on, increasing to 255 in 2020. All certificate holders are in Latin America, the largest exporter of bananas in the world.  The increased uptake indicates that the add-on is seen as a viable way to help avoid the spread of the TR4 disease and protect the livelihoods which depend on banana production in Latin America.
